India fought back hard on day two of the Wankhede Test in Mumbai. After the bowlers conceded 400 bowling first, India ended up on 146 for 1 in 52 overs. Murali Vijay returned to form, remaining unbeaten on 70 while Cheteshwar Pujara was not out on 47. Here are some significant stats from the second day’s play.

Ravichandran Ashwin finished the innings with figures of 6 for 112 from 44 overs. This was his 23rd five-wicket haul in Test matches. With this, he has equalled Kapil Dev’s record, who also had 23 five-fors in his Test career. Ashwin is the now the joint third highest among Indian bowlers with most five-fors, along with Kapil. Only Anil Kumble with 35 five-fors and Harbhajan Singh with 25 ahead of him.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ashwin is the quickest to 23 five-fors in Test cricket. He is currently in his 43rd Test. Harbhajan took 75 Tests to reach the landmark, Kumble 81 and Kapil 114 to reach 23 five-fors.

In international cricket, Ashwin is the second quickest to reach 23 five-fors. On the legendary Sydney Barnes is ahead of him. Barnes reached the landmark in only 27 Tests. Barnes ended with 24 five-fors from 27 Tests, in all claiming 189 wickets at a splendid average of 16.43, with 7 ten-wicket hauls.

Ashwin’s five-for is his 7th in 2016 so far. This is the second time he has taken seven five-fors in a calendar year. He did the same in 2015 as well. To put Ashwin’s effort into context, Muttiah Muralitharan is the only other bowler to take seven or more five-fors in a year more than once. The Sri Lankan legend achieved the feat four times -- 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2006.

Ashwin’s five-for on Friday was his 18th in India in 26 Tests. This is the second best by an Indian bowler in India. Kumble claimed as many as 25 five-wicket hauls playing at home while Harbhajan also claimed the same number of five-fors as Ashwin in India.

Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara finished with an unbeaten stand of 107. This is their seventh hundred-run partnership in Test matches. They have so far added 2251 runs as a pair at an average of 66.20.

Jos Buttler just seems to love batting against India. He has so far played six innings against India, including the one on Friday, and only once has he been dismissed for under 40. His Test scores against India are as follows – 85, 70, 45, 43, 18 and 76. Buttler’s average against India is highly impressive, in the mid-50s.

England put up their third consecutive score of 400 or more. They posted exactly 400 in 2006 as well and 413 in 2012. On both the occasions, they ended up winning the Test. In fact, only once in 13 Tests has a team posting 400 in their first innings lost. That was way back in 1975, when West Indies got the better of India. Out of the other Tests, seven have been won and six drawn when a team has posted 400 in their first innings.
