India overcame England in the third Test of the series at Mohali on Tuesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-Test series

India overcame England in the third Test of the series at Mohali on Tuesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-Test series. Resuming the day at 78 for 4, England folded up for 236. India gunned down the target of 103 with eight wickets in hand. Here’s a look at interesting stats from what turned out to be the last day’s play.

India have not lost a single Test at Mohali since going down to West Indies in the first Test played at the venue in 1994. In a total of 13 Tests played at the venue so far, India have won seven and drawn five. This impressive record is the third best by any team at a given venue over the last two decades. Australia hold the best record in this respect, with a 14-0 record at Brisbane. India come second as well, with an 8-0 record at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

Parthiv Patel made an unbeaten 67 in the second innings to lead India’s victory surge. His previous Test fifty came against Australia at Chennai in October 2004, nearly 12 years back, when he made 54 in India’s first innings of the Test. This was Parthiv’s fifth fifty in Test cricket. Incidentally, he has never reached 70 in his Test career thus far, although this was the fourth time he had reached the 60s. His highest Test score so far is 69 against Pakistan at Rawalpindi in April 2004.

Including Mohali, India have now been undefeated in 16 consecutive Tests, since the defeat against England back in 2012. This is now their second longest unbeaten sequence. Another victory or draw would mean they would have matched their best unbeaten sequence in Tests – 17 from 1985 to 1987. The record for the same stands in the name of West Indies, who were undefeated in 27 Tests from January 1982 to December 1984.

Virat Kohli registered his 12th win as Test captain in his 20th Test. Kohli has lost 2 out of his first 20 Tests. This is exactly what previous captain MS Dhoni had achieved in his first 20 Tests. His record went awry as India were whitewashed in Australia and England later during his captaincy tenure. Coming back to wins, Steve Waugh is the most successful captain when one considers the first 20 Tests. He won 15.

Key England batsman Joe Root registered his 11th Test fifty this year. No other batsman has as many half-centuries in Tests this year. Root himself holds the record for most Test fifties in a calendar year. He made 13 in 2015.

Indian opener Murali Vijay’s struggles continued as he was dismissed for a duck in the second innings at Mohali. Since the 126 in the first innings at Rajkot, his scores read 31, 20, 3, 12 and 0. Even in the previous series against New Zealand, he began with 65 and 76, but not reach even 20 in the next two Tests.
